Smashwords and D2D Merger

Important news for indie writers. An email just arrived in my inbox, from one Mark Coker, the CEO of Smashwords, saying that the two publishing platforms have decided to merge, and it’s all set to be concluded on or about the 1st of March.

D2D’s YouTube channel is hosting a live Q&A tomorrow (Wednesday) at midday (Mountain Time) with Mark Coker and Kris Austin. (D2D’s CEO)

I plan to be there with my ‘The Wunder-Lusters’, hat on – mostly because that’s the name of our YouTube channel.

Here’s the LINK to the Q&A. Or just do a search on YouTube.

My feeling is this is going to be great for authors who publish on either/both platforms … the best of both worlds. Of course there’ll be chaos and grumbles and pouting though, that’s what humans do.

  1. I hope it works out. It’s good to have an alternative to Amazon.

I hope Smashwords incorporates D2D’s tech because the only time I ever tried to download something from SW, nothing happened. Was not impressed. Will be interesting to see what changes happen.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is why SW hasn’t upgraded their systems in a while. A merger like this doesn’t just suddenly appear out of the blue. There’ll be glitches and ‘oopsies’, but I think (hope) all us indies will reap the benefits in the end.

Interesting news. I hope it works out. I’ve not much experience with either so I’ve learned something new today. Thanks!

  4. I’m not ready to go wide – I can barely manage my Amazon presence. Some day. There is an opportunity cost to everything, and I can’t pay for expanded distribution, and I doubt it will improve my sales (meager right now). The thing that should help the most is getting the current book finished and published – everything else is on hold. Having a single book is NOT the best for marketing.

  5. I saw this announcement too, and it sounds like good news. I haven’t explored the details yet, so thanks for the link!
