(following on from 42)

That’s 22°C – which is the temperature outside our little cottage on Widder Island today.

I don’t think human bodies are designed to adapt to such drastic fluctuations. I know mine isn’t. If I had to save my life I could probably move faster than a snail on valium, but it’d be a close call.

On top of which … I had my second vaccine shot yesterday. I’m really hoping I don’t have the sort of reaction to this one that I did last time, but so far, it’s not looking good. Sore arm, hyper-sensitive skin, aching muscles, etc.

On top of which … vertigo migraines, probably also triggered by heat/temperature change.

On top of which … a little village called Lytton, just a few villages up the Fraser Canyon from us, and battling a wildfire in the mountains nearby, broke its own temperature record three days in a row, finishing with 49.6°C (121°F) the day before yesterday. Yesterday afternoon (30th June) it burned to the ground. The entire village. The residents had 15 minutes to evacuate.

I’m a bit of a cry-er. I feel happy, I cry. I feel sad, I cry. I hear bagpipes, I cry. (I know, that one’s weird) I’ve been crying off and on all day.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’d rather be teary than squish everything down, but it’s really, really, exhausting.

I need a cuppa tea.

  1. Just how safe are you from the fires? A good cuppa does seem to help, but not if it’s coming your way.

Before these last days I would’ve said, ‘perfectly safe, we’re on an island in the middle of a lake after all, but now?
The worst months for hot temperatures and wildfires are still ahead of us …
We’re far enough away from those fires to be safe, and being in a temperate rainforest helps 🙂 … and being country gals, both of us, we’re prepared (as well as we can be) for all sorts of nasty stuff.
The cuppa tea did the trick, that and hugs from the missus. 🙂

I don’t think that I could survive half-boiliing as the ambient, I begin to whine and slink about looking for cool corners at twenty-two of the Celsinghams.

22 is my ideal summer temperature too, anything more and I storm outside, and give the heavens the ‘look’ … and scurry back inside before the heavens ‘look’ back! 😀

Staying safe, and moderately comfortable not the temperatures are hovering around 26-ish … my ideal summer temps are in the 20-23 range though. Now if I could just find a place like that that has no mosquitos I’d be a very happy woman. 😀

In southern Ontario we are used to those temperatures so we understand what you’re going through and we sympathize. My heart hurts for the forest fire victims and the victims of the heat.

  7. Stay safe. My heart breaks for the people of Lytton. So very sad.
ps. many of us cry when we listen to bagpipes. It’s a perfectly normal reaction.

Staying safe. 🙂 … so, I’m not that weird after all. How disappointing! 😀 😀 … seriously though, I wonder what it triggers? … certain harmonics do create sympathetic resonances in our brain structure, it is a conundrum. 🙂

  10. Nothing helps like a good cuppa. Hope you feel better soon! So sad for the people of Lytton. 😦 We had a wildfire near enough to share some of the smoke this past week, but were fortunate to get it mitigated to spare the neighborhoods nearby it. Again my heart goes out to those who had to evacuate and lost their homes.

As an Australian who’s experienced a lot of fires, I hope you get all the info you need to make decisions at the right time to stay safe – and have the flask for the cuppa ready to go at a moments notice.

As women born and bred in the country, albeit on opposite sides of the Pacific, we’re old hands at this emergency thing … it really ticks me off when there’s a series of them on a macro and micro scale all happening at the same time.
After every crisis that comes along we do a review of our systems and stay ahead of the game.

the last few have been monsters from another plane, beyond my wildest fears. Not sure if I could stay ahead of them if I’d been in those regions. I’m not afraid of dying, but by flame? No thanks.

  12. I’ve visited Lytton several times (not recently, though). It’s a uniquely beautiful place. The fire is a tragedy, and it looks like there will be other terrible fires in BC this year.
I had my second shot just over a week ago. Unlike the first one, I had a seriously sore arm for a few days.
Tea and a hug always help.

Yep, just the beginning, I think. 😦
We drove through Lytton on our way to a family reunion a few years back … as you say, pretty little village, had some great icecream. 🙂 … it will take years, at the very least to come back from this.

  15. All the hugs. I’m putting down mulch in my garden for the first time in forever to protect against what I’m seeing as a very hot summer to come, down here in VA. I’m so desperately worried about my friends in Canada and along the western US and Florida. I wish I could just sweep us all up and deposit us in, like, the middle of Wyoming or something. High in the mountains. In early winter perpetual. :/
