Heat Dome – the Equator’s revenge for all those arctic outflows.

I have been sweltering under a heat dome for the last three days and take great joy (sarcasm mode engaged) in knowing another three, at least, are immanent.

I do not approve of heat domes.

Thankfully we have our trusty portable air conditioner, who over the last two years has only had to run for a few days. So far its been going flat out for seven. (with breaks between the o’clocks of 2am and 9am)

The ‘42’ in the title doesn’t refer to Sir Douglas Adams’s answer to everything, It’s how hot it got today, 42°C. That’s 107° for the Fahrenheitists among us.

That’s an ugly heat folks, and I am done with it.

To those of you in the neighbourhood, (I’m talking geographical not geo-political) I hope you’re managing to stay cool and hydrated.

  1. If there’s a place with better weather that isn’t affected by the global climate change, it’s probably already full.

  6. When the temperatures reach just over 30 here in the UK, the tarmac on the roads begins to melt. Hope you can get some sleep at night.

We are looking at 38, 39, 40 for the next few days. I am not amused. Two window air conditioners four ceiling fans and a Dyson fan are running all day. I am comfortable, just.

We’ve ordered two small water-coolers for the bedrooms. Our poor AC is handling the load, just … and we’re still going to need it when the temps drop to the low 30’s by the end of the week. Crazy days.

  8. My daughter lives in Portland, and she said they were expecting temps of 115 F this week. Unreal.

It is supposed to get to 43 today! Crazy.
    Stay cool.

Ugh. I condole you (Patsy Stone quote). I cannot bear being too warm, let alone hot! Worst that I’ve ever been in was 44C while in Australia, and I swear on the Holly Bibble, there were little red chaps with scaly skin, forked tails and horns, running around poking people with tridents. I was ready to ring up Mr God and accept his terms for peace.

The difference between 42 degrees (day before yesterday) and 26 (today) is astonishing. It feels positively chilly!!! 😀 almost.

Much, MUCH nicer. Spikes like that are awful, especially if you’re not used to that kind of heat. Now if only our governments would start doing something about stopping them. -sigh-

Ah Meeks, I know what you mean 😦 … this is waaaay beyond any government’s ability to stop. 😦 … I’m afraid the cycle is well on its way and the best we (as a species) can hope for is to survive it. Individually, and in groups, we can make small changes to make the ride a little less bumpy … but can you imagine any government, or company, willing to spend the trillions it would require to give the majority of humans a decent quality of life in the decades to come? If by some chance they did get around to it, it’d be far too late.
On a more positive note, I think those individuals and groups will create sanctuary ‘islands’ of sanity and regeneration … enough to carry us through. There’s my hope. 🙂

  13. Cloudy with a few sprinkles here today… at long last. We too had several days that hit over 100 F and we topped out at 114 (45.5 C) For a region that rarely hits 100, this was crazy! Perhaps we’ll remember to appreciate our usual rainy chill. Definitely all about 22 C now. Love it!
Your explanation of the heat dome is interesting, and also mildly terrifying. (Can one be mildly terrified? Yes, if terrified not now but in imagining the future.) Sounds like this may become a thing around here. Ugh.

This is what the climate scientists meant by ‘extreme weather events’, and yeah, they’re not going away any time soon. 😦

      • Sigh… I think we’re going to have to start modifying our homes to handle extremes. We’ve definitely built for temperate climate in my area, but that’s becoming a problem. So glad I live a mountain fed river! It will take a long time for that to run warm, I think.

Or run dry for that matter.
I agree with you about changing house design. We’re thinking along the lines of earth construction, either underground, half-underground … which would have the double benefit of protection from extreme weather events, hot and cold, and be super fire-resistant. (so long as it’s designed properly, of course) There are so many ways to make them things of art and beauty as well as functionality
