Even though I knew she was way older than me, she was one of the women/girls my nascent queer mind struggled to decide if I wanted to be or to date. Her characters always had a duality for me that resonated with my adolescent confusion and made her humor so appealing to me. Sad to see her go.
It’s so weird to have never met any of these people–the famous ones who pass away–but they’ve been a part of my (our) lives for so long, it’s almost like I (we) know them personally. And I do feel bereft when they leave the planet.
We keep losing our touchstones.

Laverne & Shirley was my favorite show growing up, and then Laverne went on to become a fine motion picture director. Rest in peace Penny Marshall.
